Chapter 6
Griffin
The next morning, in a dizzying rush of anticipation and dread, Griffin unlocked the doors at Williams Dental. He was early. He’d finally abandoned any attempt to go back to sleep after waking up too early with thoughts of Aubrey.
When she’d said the tree had “shimmer and excitement,” all he’d thought of was how she was shimmer and excitement. She brightened up his dull and solitary life in subtle and surprising ways. He hadn’t wanted to see it, but she’d been good for him. She was exactly what he hadn’t been willing to admit he needed.
They’d almost kissed. He’d wanted to. The electrifying, impossibly intense, and meaningful moment had filled him with more emotion than he’d felt in a long time.
He’d been on autopilot since his life changed so drastically three years before, when he’d given up his outreach work and settled in Gramercy for his father and mother’s sake. To feel something deeply after all this time, especially something pleasurable and so…right, was what made it meaningful.
But they worked together. They needed to maintain a sense of decency. Knowing Aubrey like he thought he was beginning to, there would be little danger of her being unprofessional. But he hoped he could focus on work, all while letting her know he cared for her.
When Aubrey came in that morning, she didn’t waste any time. She looked at him from across the breakroom, and her chin tilted up, her eyes gazing at him through heavy lids. The look on her face was like a magnet, drawing him to her. He moved to stand near her in the doorway, and she glanced from side to side before whispering, “We need to talk about last night.” She looked down at his lips and then back at his eyes. “But our patients are already here, so later?” Her smile, mixed with the barest look of uncertainty in her eyes, undid him all over again.
He nodded and opened his mouth to add something, when they were interrupted by a patient’s jovial voice approaching them in the hall.
“Merry Christmas to the docs!” The man clapped a hand on Griffin’s shoulder. “Both of you.” His booming laugh carried through the building, and his gaze moved back and forth between them before settling on Aubrey. “You’re the new doc, right? I’m Charles Jurgen. Hey, I saw you two last night at the play. You had great seats. I was way in the back. But I told my wife, ‘Looks like the doctors are more than just business partners, if you know what I mean.’” He gave an exaggerated elbow poke to Griffin and winked at him.
Aubrey’s face flushed, and she produced a colorless smile. “The play was great, wasn’t it? Are you here to see Dr. Williams or me today?”
“I’ve never had anyone but a Williams take care of my teeth, and I don’t intend to start now. No offense.” His head cocked to one side, and he laughed again. “I’m sure you’re a great dentist too. But old geezers like me tend to like tradition.
